Zen mobile game

A calm and intuitive digital board game experience

Overview

Gamaku Zen was an exploration into transforming a traditional board game experience into a calming and immersive mobile experience. The objective was to design a digital board game that captured the simplicity, balance, and mindfulness associated with Japanese Zen philosophy while maintaining an intuitive and engaging gameplay experience. Unlike conventional mobile games that rely on fast interactions and visual stimulation, Gamaku Zen focuses on creating a slower, more thoughtful experience where players can focus entirely on strategy and decision-making.

Designing Around Mobile Constraints

The primary UX challenge was adapting a board-based experience to a limited mobile screen without compromising visibility or gameplay depth. Physical board games naturally provide space for players to view the entire game state, while mobile devices require careful management of limited screen real estate. The challenge was to ensure that players could navigate a large game board while still having easy access to essential controls. To address this, I introduced a dedicated zoom control system that allowed players to smoothly adjust their view of the board. This provided flexibility in exploring the game space while keeping interactions simple and uninterrupted.

Creating a Calm and Premium Visual Language

The visual direction was inspired by Japanese Zen gardens, focusing on creating a sense of balance, calmness, and harmony. The UI was designed around principles of minimalism, ensuring that every element served a clear purpose without distracting from the gameplay. The challenge was to create a premium aesthetic while maintaining usability. Visual elements such as spacing, typography, colours, and interactions were carefully considered to establish a peaceful atmosphere that complemented the strategic nature of the game.

Designing a Stress-Free Gameplay Experience

Board games often require players to manage multiple states, rules, and decisions. Translating these mechanics into a mobile interface required simplifying interactions without reducing the richness of the experience. Key gameplay elements such as player turns and timer were prioritised within the interface to help players maintain awareness of the game state. An undo functionality was introduced to reduce the anxiety associated with accidental moves and create a more forgiving experience. The final experience focused on creating a balance between strategy and serenity. By combining intuitive interactions with a minimal visual system, Gamaku Zen allows players to engage with the game naturally without feeling overwhelmed by controls or information. Through this project, I explored how digital design can preserve the essence of traditional experiences while adapting them for modern platforms.
